Newborn pulse oximeter: what to know

Short answer

A newborn pulse oximeter estimates oxygen levels, but a reading must be interpreted with the baby’s appearance and symptoms.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the monitor measures

The device uses a light sensor, commonly placed on a finger, toe, or foot, to estimate oxygen saturation and count the pulse. Movement, a loose sensor, cold skin, poor circulation, bright light, or crying can make the display unstable. A monitor cannot diagnose the cause of a breathing problem or replace an examination.

Newborn screening may involve comparing readings from different sites under clinical supervision. Home devices and adult-sized sensors may not fit correctly, so their results can be misleading. A Pulse Oximeter page explains the technology, while a GP Consultation can provide a structured assessment.

How to respond to a reading

Keep your baby calm, warm, and still, and make sure the sensor is positioned as instructed. Wait for a stable signal rather than reacting to a rapidly changing display. Record the time, the displayed reading, and what your baby was doing, then follow the instructions from the maternity or paediatric team.

Do not place a sensor tightly, rely on a consumer device to reassure you, or delay care while repeating measurements. Never use a monitor as a reason to ignore unusual breathing, feeding difficulty, or a change in colour.

When to seek care

Call emergency services immediately for blue or grey lips or skin, severe breathing difficulty, pauses in breathing, collapse, or a baby who is difficult to wake. Seek urgent clinical advice if your newborn is breathing faster or harder than usual, grunting, repeatedly stopping feeds, unusually sleepy, or looks unwell, even if the displayed reading seems reassuring. A clinician should assess a persistently concerning reading rather than relying on home checks.

Questions to take to the clinician

Ask which sensor site and device are appropriate, what signal quality means, and which symptoms should prompt immediate action. Ask how readings should be interpreted during sleep, feeding, or crying and whether follow-up monitoring is needed.

Questions people ask

Can I use an adult pulse oximeter on my newborn?

An adult device or sensor may fit poorly and produce misleading results. Use equipment and instructions provided or approved by the clinical team.

Does a normal reading rule out illness?

No. A newborn can still need assessment for breathing, feeding, colour, or alertness changes even when a reading appears reassuring.
