Newborn hiccups during feeding: practical guidance

Short answer
When hiccups interrupt a newborn feed, pause calmly, support an upright position, and restart only when breathing is comfortable.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why feeding can bring them on
Feeding asks a newborn to coordinate sucking, swallowing, and breathing. A change in the stomach or a little swallowed air can stimulate the diaphragm and produce hiccups. This can happen with breast or bottle feeds. Hiccups by themselves are not proof of acid reflux or gastritis. Concern rises when the episodes are part of a wider feeding problem, such as repeated coughing, distress, poor coordination, persistent vomiting, or refusal to feed.
Steps during the episode
Remove the breast or bottle gently and keep your baby upright against your chest, supporting the head. Wait for quiet, regular breathing and a relaxed body before trying again. Check that the nipple flow is not overwhelming your baby and that the latch is comfortable; a feeding professional can help assess this. Feed responsively rather than urging a baby to finish. Never give water, honey, gripe mixtures, or other substances to stop newborn hiccups.
Warning signs
Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, blue colour around the lips, choking that does not settle, or a baby who is difficult to wake. Arrange prompt medical review if every feed is disrupted, your baby cannot keep feeds down, vomit is green or forceful, or there are fewer wet nappies than expected. Record a short description of the timing and any coughing or spit-up to share with the clinician.
Questions to bring
Ask whether feeding volume, pace, latch, or nipple flow could be contributing, and whether your baby's growth and hydration are reassuring. Ask which symptoms should prompt same-day advice.

Questions people ask
Should I burp my newborn during hiccups?
A calm upright pause may allow swallowed air to come up, but never pat forcefully or continue if your baby is distressed.
Are hiccups during every feed normal?
They can still be benign, but a repeated pattern that disrupts feeds deserves discussion with your baby's clinician.
