What should you know about newborn dandruff remedies?

Flakes or greasy scales on a baby’s scalp are often called cradle cap and may occur as part of [Seborrheic Dermatitis](/conditions/seborrheic-dermatitis/). It can look different from ordinary [Dandruff](/conditions/dandruff/) in an older child or adult. The scalp may have yellowish scale without much discomfort, but appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

A newborn’s skin is delicate. Strong anti-dandruff products, essential oils, scraping, and adult shampoos can irritate it. If the baby has [Itchy Scalp](/symptoms/itchy-scalp/) or [Flaky Scalp](/symptoms/scalp-flaking/), a healthcare professional can decide whether simple care is enough.

Wash the scalp with a mild baby cleanser, loosen softened scale with a soft brush, and rinse without picking. A small amount of plain emollient may be suggested before washing, but check the product and method with your baby’s clinician, particularly if the skin is cracked or inflamed.
