New treatments for stage 4 lung cancer

Treatment may include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or a medicine aimed at a particular tumour change. Genomic tumour profiling can look for features that make a targeted approach relevant. Radiotherapy can focus on a painful, obstructing, bleeding, or otherwise troublesome area. Palliative care can support comfort, breathing, energy, nutrition, and coping alongside cancer treatment.

Stage 4 describes cancer that has spread beyond its original lung area; it does not identify one uniform treatment plan. The team considers where cancer is present, how quickly symptoms are changing, breathing reserve, other conditions, and your preferences. Surgery such as lung lobectomy is used only in selected circumstances.

Ask whether tissue testing is complete and whether genomic results could change the first treatment. Discuss the goals of treatment, how response will be checked, likely effects on daily life, and what help is available at home. Keep a record of breathlessness, pain, cough, appetite, weight change, and new neurological symptoms.
