What to know about a new Philips MRI scanner

MRI does not use ionising radiation. The scanner creates images by placing the body in a magnetic field and recording signals from hydrogen in tissues. Different sequences highlight structures such as the brain, spinal cord, joints, organs or breast. A radiologist reviews the images and combines them with the clinical question.

The Philips name identifies the equipment manufacturer; it does not by itself determine whether a scan is suitable or what a result means. Some examinations use an injected contrast agent to make certain tissues easier to distinguish. The team will check kidney problems, previous contrast reactions and implanted devices before scanning.

Tell the imaging team about pacemakers, cochlear implants, metal fragments, surgical clips, pregnancy, kidney disease and claustrophobia. Remove jewellery, cards and other metal objects. Wear clothing without metal fasteners when possible. During the scan, remain still and use the call button if you need assistance; the machine makes loud knocking sounds, so hearing protection is provided.

Tell staff before entering the scanner if you are unsure about an implant or metal fragment. During or after contrast, report rash, swelling, breathing difficulty, severe dizziness or pain at the injection site immediately. Ask for help if anxiety, pain or nausea prevents you from staying still, because the team may adjust the plan.
