What should you know about new moles on the stomach?

The stomach is skin like any other body area, so pigment cells can form a new mole there. Waistbands, belts, and exercise clothing can rub the surface and make an existing mole feel irritated. Irritation alone does not explain a mole that is changing in shape or colour.

Check whether the spot is symmetrical and fairly even in outline and shade. A mole that stands out from the others, develops several colours, grows, bleeds, crusts, or remains itchy should be assessed. These observations signal the need for a clinical look, not a diagnosis by appearance.

Use a mirror to inspect the stomach and photograph the mole with a date and a size reference. Choose clothing that does not repeatedly rub it, and protect exposed skin from ultraviolet light. Note whether symptoms follow friction or continue when the area is left alone.

Arrange a dermatology review if the spot is difficult to compare or you are unsure when it appeared. A clinician can use dermoscopy and decide whether monitoring or removal is appropriate. Do not pick, tie off, or apply acid to the mole.

Contact a dermatologist promptly if the stomach mole changes rapidly, has an irregular edge, bleeds without an injury, forms repeated crusts, or becomes persistently sore or itchy. Mention any personal or family history of skin cancer when booking.

Ask whether rubbing could be contributing to symptoms, which changes you should record, and whether the lesion needs dermoscopy or removal. If removal is recommended, ask about scarring, wound care, and laboratory examination.
