What should you know about a new dark freckle?

Freckles are small areas of increased pigment that can become more noticeable after ultraviolet exposure. A newly noticed dark mark may also be another pigmented spot, an irritated lesion, or a different skin condition. Colour alone cannot identify the cause, especially when a mark is very dark or appears different from nearby freckles.

Look for change in outline, colour, size, surface, or sensation. A spot that is unlike your other marks deserves attention even when it does not hurt. Do not scratch, burn, or attempt to remove it at home, because injury can obscure its appearance and cause inflammation.

Take a clear photograph beside a familiar reference and note when you first noticed the mark. Arrange a skin examination if it is new or evolving; a clinician may inspect it closely and decide whether monitoring or further testing is appropriate. Use broad-spectrum sun protection and protective clothing, while remembering that protection does not replace assessment of a changing lesion.

If the mark is confirmed to be a benign pigment concern, options such as IPL Photofacial or Picosecond Laser Treatment may be discussed. These procedures are not appropriate until the lesion has been assessed, and pigment can darken or recur after treatment.

Book a prompt dermatology review when a freckle changes quickly, develops several colours, has an irregular edge, bleeds without clear injury, forms a persistent crust, or becomes tender or persistently itchy. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding or rapidly increasing swelling. A symptom-free mark can still need assessment if it is new and unlike your usual freckles.

Ask whether the mark looks like a freckle, whether it needs dermoscopic examination or sampling, and what changes should prompt another visit. If treatment is considered, ask why it is suitable, how the area will be protected, and how a treated site will be monitored afterward.
