What should you know about nevus spilus melanoma?

A nevus spilus is usually a café-au-lait-like background patch with smaller darker moles inside it. Most pigment changes are not melanoma, but a new, enlarging, uneven, or otherwise different focus within the patch deserves a clinician's view. Visual appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. Dermoscopy and, when needed, removal of a representative area for laboratory examination help distinguish benign change from melanoma.

Book a dermatology appointment and photograph the area in good light so change can be discussed over time. Do not scratch, burn, or attempt home removal. If melanoma is confirmed, care may include Surgical Excision or Skin Cancer Surgery. Depending on depth and findings, a Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy or other staging tests may be discussed. Treatment decisions are individual and should follow the pathology report.

Arrange prompt review for rapid growth, irregular borders, several colours, persistent bleeding, crusting, tenderness, or a spot that stands out from the others. Seek urgent help for severe illness, new weakness, confusion, or a sudden severe headache in someone already diagnosed with advanced melanoma; these symptoms need medical assessment and are not specific to one cause.
