What should you know about never having had a Pap smear at 40?

Cervical screening looks for HPV infection or cell changes on the cervix before they cause symptoms. Having missed screening does not tell you whether a problem is present. It means there is no earlier screening result to guide comparison, so booking an appointment is a useful next step.

A Pap smear collects cervical cells for laboratory examination. An HPV test looks for high-risk types of human papillomavirus, and local programs may use it alone or alongside cell testing. The clinician can explain the method used in your area and how your medical history affects the plan.

Book with a primary-care clinician, gynaecology service, or screening clinic. Tell them that you have never been screened, mention pregnancy or recent childbirth, and share any history of immune problems or previous cervical procedures. Ask how to prepare and when results will be communicated.
