What should you know about neurotropism melanoma?

Neurotropism is a feature a pathologist may identify when examining melanoma tissue. It describes tumour cells tracking beside or into small nerves near the primary skin lesion. This detail can influence how clinicians assess local spread, margins, nerve-related symptoms, and the need for additional staging. It is not the same as brain metastases; those are a separate condition involving spread to the brain.

Symptoms can include pain, altered sensation, tingling, or numbness near a lesion, but some people have no nerve symptoms. The pathology report and examination provide the information needed to interpret the finding.

Ask for a clear explanation of the pathology report and whether the excision margins are free of tumour. Your team may discuss surgical excision or other skin cancer surgery, with the approach shaped by the lesion's location and depth. A sentinel lymph node biopsy may be considered for selected melanomas. Depending on staging and overall health, immunotherapy can be part of a treatment discussion. Keep copies of pathology and imaging reports for appointments.

Contact your cancer or dermatology team promptly for a new lump near the scar, a changing or bleeding lesion, increasing pain, new numbness or weakness, or a wound that does not heal. Seek emergency help for sudden weakness, facial drooping, seizure, severe headache, confusion, or difficulty speaking. These symptoms need urgent assessment and cannot be interpreted from the skin diagnosis alone.

Ask where neurotropism appears in the report, whether margins and nerves were assessed, what staging is recommended, which specialist leads the plan, and how follow-up will monitor the scar and nearby skin.
