Neurotic depression

Short answer
Neurotic depression is an older, non-specific term for depressive symptoms occurring with prominent worry, anxiety or emotional distress; clinicians now assess the individual symptoms and their impact.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How it may feel
A person may experience low mood, loss of interest, guilt, irritability, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, anxiety and disrupted sleep. Some people feel tense and restless; others feel slowed down and withdrawn. Insomnia can worsen concentration and daytime sleepiness, while depression can make sleep less refreshing. The label itself does not establish a diagnosis or explain why symptoms started. Clinicians consider duration, severity, functioning, physical health, medicines, substance use and any history of mood elevation. Symptoms can be real and disabling even when they began during ongoing life stress.
What to do
Arrange an appointment with a doctor or mental-health professional if low mood, worry or sleep disruption persists or affects work, relationships or self-care. Describe changes in sleep, appetite, energy, concentration and enjoyment, and mention alcohol or other substances. Small routines can support recovery: keep regular waking times, eat consistently, take gentle walks and stay connected with someone trusted. Treatment may include talking therapy, practical support, medicine, or a combination, depending on your assessment.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help if you may harm yourself, cannot stay safe, feel detached from reality, or have severe agitation with very little sleep. Contact a clinician promptly for rapidly worsening depression, inability to eat or drink, or new symptoms after starting or changing treatment. If someone is in immediate danger, call local emergency services and stay with them if it is safe.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms meet criteria for depression, anxiety or another condition, and what treatment options fit your preferences. Ask how to monitor sleep and mood, when to review treatment, and who to contact if suicidal thoughts or severe agitation appear.

Questions people ask
Is neurotic depression still a formal diagnosis?
It is an older term. Clinicians generally describe the specific depressive and anxiety symptoms and assess their effect on daily life.
Can poor sleep worsen depression symptoms?
Yes. Insomnia can increase fatigue, irritability and concentration difficulty, so sleep deserves attention alongside mood and anxiety.
