Neuropathy and heat intolerance

Short answer

Neuropathy can contribute to heat intolerance when damaged nerves alter sweating, blood-flow responses or temperature sensation, but other conditions can cause heat sensitivity too.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may be happening

Peripheral nerves help the body notice temperature and regulate heat by changing sweating and blood flow near the skin. Neuropathy may cause burning, tingling, numbness or reduced awareness of hot surfaces. If sweating is reduced, the body may struggle to cool itself; if sensation is altered, you may not notice overheating or a burn promptly. Heat intolerance can also occur with hyperthyroidism, infection, medicines, obesity or poor conditioning. The combination of numbness and heat sensitivity does not identify one cause, so the timing and distribution of symptoms are useful clues.

Ways to stay safer

Plan outdoor activity for cooler hours, drink regularly and use shade, loose clothing and ventilation. Take breaks before you feel overheated. Check bath and shower water with an unaffected area or thermometer if your feet or hands are numb, and inspect skin for burns. Avoid placing a heat pack directly on numb skin. Arrange a medical review for new or worsening tingling, weakness, balance problems or changes in sweating; take a list of medicines and supplements.

When to seek care

Seek emergency help for confusion, collapse, seizure, severe headache, hot dry skin with worsening illness, trouble breathing or inability to drink. These can signal heat exhaustion or a more serious heat illness. Get prompt advice for a new foot wound, spreading redness, sudden weakness or rapidly increasing numbness, especially after heat exposure.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your sweating and temperature changes could be nerve-related, medicine-related or linked with thyroid function. Ask how to test sensation safely, whether blood tests are needed, and how to protect numb areas during hot weather.

Reduced sensation may delay awareness of overheating or burns, while altered sweating can reduce cooling.

Should I exercise in hot weather with neuropathy?

Choose cooler times, take regular breaks, drink fluids and stop at early symptoms such as dizziness, nausea or unusual weakness.
