Neurofeedback for ADHD

Neurofeedback for ADHD uses feedback from brain activity to practise attention-related patterns, but it does not replace a full assessment or guarantee symptom improvement. During a session, sensors record brain signals while a person completes a task, and software provides feedback linked to the activity. A qualified clinician should explain the goals, limits and alternatives.

ADHD is assessed through a detailed history of attention, impulsivity and activity symptoms across settings, together with their effect on learning, work, relationships and daily tasks. Sleep problems, anxiety, mood changes, substance use, hearing or vision difficulties and other conditions can look similar or occur alongside ADHD. Difficulty concentrating alone does not establish ADHD. Neurofeedback may be discussed as one option, while behavioural strategies, educational support, talking therapies or prescribed medicines may also be considered.

Ask who will assess you, what signal is being measured, how progress will be tracked, how many visits are expected, and what happens if the approach is not helping. Share your medical history and current medicines. Keep a simple record of concentration, irritability, sleep, anxious feelings and everyday functioning rather than judging progress from one session. A mental health assessment can help clarify the diagnosis and create a broader care plan.

Arrange prompt clinical support if inattention or impulsivity is causing unsafe driving, repeated accidents, severe distress, inability to manage essential tasks, or major conflict at home or work. Seek urgent help for thoughts of self-harm, loss of contact with reality, or an immediate safety concern. Neurofeedback should not delay assessment of severe anxiety, depression, sleep difficulty or another condition affecting concentration.

Ask how ADHD will be assessed, what outcome the programme is intended to change, how it compares with established options for your situation, and when the plan will be reviewed. Ask who will coordinate care if anxiety, irritability or sleep problems are also present.
