SH-SY5Y is a named group of human neuroblastoma cells maintained for laboratory work. Researchers use these cells to examine how nerve-related tumour cells grow, change, respond to substances, and develop features of nerve cells. A reference to SH-SY5Y in a paper, report, or conversation may therefore describe an experimental model rather than tissue taken from you.

Neuroblastoma itself is a cancer of immature nerve tissue, often arising in the abdomen or chest in children. The behaviour of a laboratory cell line cannot establish what a person's tumour is doing. Clinical interpretation depends on the patient's examination, imaging, biopsy findings, and other tests.
