What should you know about nerve pain during ovulation?

Ovulation can cause pain low in the abdomen or pelvis when an ovary releases an egg. Irritation near pelvic nerves may make the sensation feel sharp, burning, tingling, or like an electric jolt. It may be felt on one side and can spread to the back, hip, or thigh.

The timing alone does not prove that ovulation is the cause. Endometriosis can cause pelvic pain that follows a cycle, while ovarian cysts can cause pressure or sudden pain. A clinician considers the pattern, examination, pregnancy possibility, bleeding, bowel or bladder symptoms, and other causes.

Record when the pain starts, where it travels, how long it lasts, and whether it occurs with bleeding, discharge, fever, nausea, or urinary symptoms. Rest, gentle warmth, and a pain reliever that is suitable for you may help. If pregnancy is possible, check which medicine is appropriate before taking it.

Book an assessment if the pain keeps returning, interferes with daily activities, or changes from your usual pattern. The clinician may recommend an examination, pregnancy test, or imaging based on your symptoms.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe pelvic pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, heavy bleeding, fever, repeated vomiting, a rigid or very tender abdomen, or pain with a positive pregnancy test. These features can signal a problem that needs prompt treatment.

Ask whether the pain pattern fits ovulation, whether endometriosis or an ovarian cyst should be considered, what examination or scan is appropriate, and which symptoms should send you to urgent care.
