What should you know about a neonatal hearing test?

Short answer

A neonatal hearing test is a gentle screening check that measures a newborn’s response to sound and identifies whether follow-up assessment may be needed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Purpose
Newborn hearing screening and follow-up planning.
Best conditions
A settled baby and a quiet environment.
A repeat result
Does not by itself confirm hearing loss.

How newborn screening works

Depending on the service, screening may use a small earpiece to deliver soft sounds and measure an inner-ear response, or sensors to record how the hearing pathway responds. The baby is usually settled or asleep because movement and noise can affect the recording. A result showing that screening was not completed or needs repeating does not confirm hearing loss; fluid, movement, background noise or an unsettled baby can affect the first attempt.

After the test

Keep the result and follow the appointment instructions carefully. If repeat screening or a diagnostic hearing assessment is offered, attend even if the baby reacts to some sounds at home. Share information about birth history, family hearing conditions, ear infections or concerns about responses to sound. Do not put cotton buds or objects into the ear canal; visible blockage such as earwax should be discussed with a clinician.

When to seek further care

Arrange medical review if the baby does not startle or settle to loud sounds, seems to respond unevenly, has discharge from the ear, or has a new concern about hearing. Seek urgent care for a baby who is acutely unwell, has severe pain, or has an injury around the ear. Follow-up matters because early assessment helps the team plan support when needed.

Questions for your doctor

Which screening method was used? Was the result complete for both ears? If a repeat is needed, when should it happen? Where is diagnostic testing provided? What responses to sound should we watch for at home?
