What should you know about needle subcision?

A clinician uses a sterile needle or cannula under the scar to loosen bands that pull the skin downward. It is mainly considered for rolling acne scars that remain indented when the skin is relaxed. It does not remove every type of scar, and sharp-edged or raised scars may need another approach. Bruising, swelling, tenderness and temporary unevenness can occur while the tissue settles.

The result develops gradually because the skin must remodel after the tether is released. Some people need more than one treatment, depending on scar depth, skin response and the treatment plan. Acne that is still inflamed may need attention before scar work.

Choose a qualified medical practitioner who can examine the scar pattern, discuss skin tone and review medicines that affect bleeding or healing. Before treatment, disclose active acne, cold sores, allergies and any tendency to form raised scars. Afterward, follow the wound-care instructions, keep the area clean, avoid picking, and protect healing skin from strong sun. Do not schedule strenuous activity or facial treatments until your clinician says they are appropriate.

Contact the clinic promptly if pain or swelling is worsening rather than settling, redness is spreading, the area feels hot, or drainage develops. Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, facial swelling involving the mouth or throat, faintness, or sudden changes in vision. A small amount of bruising can be expected, but unusual bleeding should be reported.
