Short answer

Necrotising cellulitis is a rapidly worsening deep skin and soft-tissue infection that needs emergency hospital assessment and treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Urgency
Emergency hospital assessment
Concerning pattern
Rapid progression with severe pain or tissue change
Possible treatment
Intravenous antibiotics and urgent surgery

Why this infection is dangerous

Ordinary Cellulitis affects the skin and tissues beneath it, causing redness, warmth, swelling, and pain. A necrotising infection can spread through deeper layers and damage tissue quickly. Pain may be severe or seem greater than the visible skin changes. The area can enlarge, become tense, blister, bruise, turn dusky, or develop numbness. Fever, chills, weakness, confusion, or a fast heartbeat can indicate that the infection is affecting the whole body. Entry points may include a wound, injection, surgery, ulcer, or skin break; Athlete's Foot can also create cracks that allow bacteria to enter. Type 2 Diabetes and other health problems can increase concern, but anyone with rapid deterioration needs assessment.

What to do now

Do not wait for a routine appointment or try to treat a rapidly worsening area with creams alone. Go to an emergency department or call local emergency services, especially if pain, Skin Redness, Skin Swelling, or fever is progressing over hours. Tell clinicians when the change began, how quickly it spread, any injury or procedure, recent medicines, allergies, and relevant medical conditions. Do not press, massage, puncture, or apply heat to the area. Hospital care may include examination, blood tests or imaging, intravenous antibiotics, fluids, pain control, and urgent surgery to remove damaged tissue. Treatment may need adjustment as the team identifies the infection and monitors for Sepsis.

Emergency warning signs

Seek emergency help immediately for rapidly spreading redness or swelling, severe or escalating skin pain, blisters, purple or black colour, numbness, fever, shaking chills, faintness, confusion, difficulty breathing, or a racing heartbeat. Do not use the absence of fever to rule out a serious infection. If you feel very unwell or cannot travel safely, call emergency services rather than driving yourself.

Questions for your doctor

Could this infection involve deeper tissue? Which tests will help define its extent? Do I need urgent surgery or intravenous antibiotics? How will you monitor for sepsis? What wound care, mobility advice, and follow-up will I need after treatment?

Questions people ask

Is necrotising cellulitis the same as ordinary cellulitis?

No. Necrotising infection can involve deeper tissue and progress rapidly, so it requires emergency assessment rather than routine home care.

Can I wait to see whether antibiotics at home work?

Do not delay when symptoms are rapidly worsening, pain is severe, or the skin is blistering or changing colour. Hospital treatment may be needed urgently.
