What should you know about a neck lump on the side of the neck?

Side-of-neck lumps commonly involve cervical lymph nodes, which can enlarge while the body responds to an infection in the throat, teeth, ear, or skin. Other possibilities include a cyst, salivary-gland swelling, thyroid tissue, or a deeper mass. Head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, and cancer of unknown primary can also present with a neck mass, but the presence of a lump does not mean a person has cancer. Tenderness and recent infection may provide context, while a firm, fixed, or steadily growing lump deserves careful review.

Note the exact side and level of the lump, its approximate size, when it appeared, and whether it moves when you swallow. Mention recent infections, dental work, smoking or alcohol exposure, voice change, ear symptoms, swallowing trouble, and any previous cancer treatment. A clinician may examine the neck and mouth, request imaging, or recommend a needle sample. Avoid self-diagnosing from location or repeatedly checking it throughout the day.

Get urgent help if swelling affects breathing or swallowing, or if it grows quickly with severe pain or fever. Seek prompt review for a lump that persists or enlarges, feels hard or fixed, or occurs with persistent hoarseness, swallowing difficulty, unexplained weight loss, or night sweats. These are reasons for timely evaluation, not proof of a cancer diagnosis.

Ask what structure appears enlarged, whether the location suggests a lymph node or another tissue, which tests are needed, and how soon results will be available. Ask what changes should prompt earlier contact and whether an ear, nose, and throat specialist is appropriate.
