Stiff neck and headache: what should you know?

A tense neck and scalp can produce pressure or aching across the head, particularly after screen work, stress, poor sleep or an awkward position. Viral illness, sinus symptoms, heat exposure or dehydration can also bring headache and neck discomfort. A headache with fever, a rash, confusion or strong light sensitivity is more concerning than an isolated tight muscle. Record when it began, how quickly it developed, and any associated symptoms.

Rest somewhere comfortable, drink fluids if you may be dehydrated, and reduce bright light or screen time while symptoms settle. Try slow shoulder rolls and gentle neck movement; stop if pain shoots into an arm or symptoms worsen. Use a wrapped warm or cool pack according to what feels better. Do not combine pain medicines or exceed label directions, and check suitability with a pharmacist if you are pregnant or have another medical condition.

Call for urgent care if the headache is sudden and severe, follows an injury, or occurs with fever, rash, confusion, fainting, repeated vomiting, weakness, numbness, speech trouble, walking difficulty or pronounced light sensitivity. Seek same-day advice when neck movement is becoming more restricted or the headache is worsening. Book an appointment for recurrent episodes or symptoms that do not settle.
