How tattoo treatment works
The 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength is commonly selected for darker ink colours, while some systems use another wavelength for different pigments. Ink colour, density, depth, age, layering, location, and the presence of scarring all affect the plan. A tattoo may lighten unevenly as separate colours respond differently.
Treatment is a process rather than a single erasing event. The skin needs time to recover between sessions, and the clinician may change settings as the tattoo fades. Complete clearing is not promised, and a residual shadow or texture change can remain.
Preparing and caring for the area
Tell the clinician about tanning, keloid or raised-scar history, allergies, medicines, cold sores, and any previous tattoo treatment. Avoid tanning before treatment and follow instructions about shaving or topical products. Ask whether a small test area is appropriate for your ink and skin.
Eye protection is required. The treated area may feel hot and can become red, swollen, crusted, or blistered. Keep it clean, do not peel the surface, use only recommended ointment or dressings, and shield healing skin from sunlight.
When to seek care
Contact the treating clinic for worsening pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, extensive blistering, or delayed healing. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing trouble, or eye symptoms. A raised scar or lasting colour change should be reviewed rather than treated at home.
