Nd:YAG laser hair: what to know

The device delivers pulses of light that are absorbed more strongly by the hair than by the surrounding skin. Heat travels toward the follicle and can limit its ability to produce a thick hair. Only follicles in an active growth phase respond well, so treated hairs shed gradually and follow-up sessions are commonly needed. Results vary with hair colour, thickness, body area, hormones, and skin response.

Discuss recent tanning, medicines, active rashes, scars, and a tendency to develop dark marks before treatment. Follow the clinic's shaving and sun-avoidance instructions, and do not wax or pluck hairs that need to be targeted. Mild warmth, redness, or swelling around follicles can occur briefly. Cool compresses and gentle skin care may help; avoid irritating products until the skin settles.

Contact the treating clinician if pain is escalating, blisters develop, swelling is marked, or the treated area becomes increasingly dark, pale, crusted, or infected. Urgent assessment is appropriate for facial swelling with breathing difficulty or widespread blistering. A new changing mole or unexplained persistent patch should be assessed separately rather than treated cosmetically.

Ask which wavelength and settings fit your skin and hair, what cooling is used, how many visits may be needed, and how your response will be checked. Ask when to pause treatment for a rash, medication change, or sun exposure.
