What should you know about Nd:YAG laser?

Nd:YAG is the name of the laser medium, and the device commonly emits light at a wavelength that can reach deeper than some shorter-wavelength systems. The energy is absorbed by a chosen target and converted into heat. Pulse duration, spot size, energy, cooling, and the target itself change the treatment experience; there is no single Nd:YAG procedure.

A clinic may use it for hair reduction, selected vascular concerns, or other indications. The same technology can therefore sound different from one consultation to another. A clinician should first identify the target and examine your skin, hair, medical history, and any recent tanning or inflammation.

Tell the clinician about medicines, previous laser reactions, scarring, cold sores, pregnancy plans, active rashes, and products that make skin sensitive. Follow instructions about shaving, avoiding sun exposure, and pausing irritating skincare. After treatment, keep the area clean, reduce friction and heat, and use the recommended moisturiser and sun protection. Do not compare protocols by the device name alone: ask what target is being treated, what response is expected, and whether more than one visit may be needed.

Arrange a review for increasing pain, blisters, open skin, pus, spreading redness, or a new pronounced light or dark mark. Urgent help is needed for breathing difficulty or major facial swelling. Temporary warmth, redness, or follicle swelling may occur, but a reaction that is intense or persistent should be assessed before another session.

Ask what the laser is targeting, why its wavelength suits that target, how your skin tone affects settings, and whether cooling or a test spot is planned. Clarify preparation, expected downtime, warning signs, alternatives, and how the clinician will judge whether the treatment should continue.
