A practitioner spreads a carbon-containing lotion over the skin and allows it to sit before applying laser pulses. The energy interacts with the carbon layer and can lift surface oil and debris while warming the skin. People may seek this procedure for a fresher-looking surface, oily skin, or the appearance of enlarged pores, but the visible effect and suitability vary. It is not the same as removing a deep scar, treating every acne cause, or replacing a medical diagnosis.

Warmth, a light snapping sensation, redness, or tightness may follow. The treatment area, laser settings, active acne, eczema, infection, and recent procedures influence whether treatment should go ahead.

Tell the practitioner about active rashes, cold sores, medicines, allergies, recent peels, retinoids, waxing, and strong sun exposure. A little warmth or redness can be part of the immediate response, while persistent pigment change deserves assessment rather than further self-treatment.
