What should you know about nccn lung cancer?

Short answer
Lung cancer treatment depends on its type, stage, molecular features, location and your breathing capacity.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Key tests
- Biopsy, scans and tumour profiling
- Possible local treatment
- Surgery or radiotherapy
- Support focus
- Breathing, symptoms and daily function
What this means
Lung cancer is not one single disease. Testing identifies whether it is small-cell or non-small-cell cancer, where it began, and whether it has moved to lymph nodes or other organs. Genomic tumour profiling can look for changes that may make a tumour suitable for a particular medicine.
For disease limited to part of a lung, an operation such as lung lobectomy may be considered. Radiotherapy can target a tumour or a painful or threatening area. Chemotherapy and other systemic treatments act throughout the body. Palliative care can support breathing, pain, appetite, sleep and emotional wellbeing at any stage.
What to do next
Ask which biopsy results, scans and molecular tests are complete before treatment starts. Clarify whether the aim is to remove visible cancer, control it, prevent symptoms or combine these goals. Discuss lung function, smoking or vaping support, nutrition and rehabilitation. Keep a record of breathlessness, cough, chest discomfort and treatment effects for appointments.
When to seek care
Contact the care team promptly for new or worsening breathlessness, coughing blood, chest pain, fever or a hoarse voice that does not settle. Get emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion, sudden weakness or a seizure. A hoarse voice has many possible causes and does not by itself establish lung cancer.
Questions for your doctor
What type and stage of lung cancer is present? Are genomic results available, and could they change treatment? Is surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or another medicine appropriate? How will treatment affect breathing and energy? What symptoms need urgent attention, and who should I call after hours?
Questions people ask
Why might genomic tumour profiling be offered?
It can identify tumour changes that help the team consider specific treatment options.
Can palliative care be used during cancer treatment?
Yes. It can help manage symptoms and support quality of life alongside cancer-directed treatment.
