Navel piercing keloid treatment: what to know

A piercing creates a skin injury, and some people form excess scar tissue that grows beyond the original channel. The result can be firm, raised, itchy, tender, or darker than nearby skin. Irritation from jewellery, a trapped foreign body, infection, or a hypertrophic scar can mimic a keloid. A dermatologist examines the lump and the piercing tract before selecting treatment.

Avoid twisting jewellery, squeezing the lump, or applying strong antiseptics. If the piercing remains, ask a clinician whether the jewellery should be removed and how to do so safely. Steroid injection into the skin can soften and flatten scar tissue; cryotherapy or laser treatment may target thickness or colour. Keloid removal surgery can be considered for selected lesions, usually with a plan to reduce renewed growth. Follow wound-care instructions closely after any procedure.

Arrange review when the lump continues to enlarge, rubs against clothing, or causes pain or persistent itch. Seek prompt help for pus, heat, spreading redness, fever, or sudden worsening, since these features may indicate infection. Urgent assessment is appropriate for heavy bleeding, severe pain, or a rapidly changing lesion.

Ask whether the bump is a keloid or piercing complication, whether jewellery should stay in place, which combination of treatments is suitable, and how recurrence and wound care will be managed.
