Navel keloid: what to know

Keloid tissue can follow a piercing, operation, scratch, or other break in the skin. Around the navel it may feel firm, smooth, itchy, tender, or tight, and its colour may differ from nearby skin. A lump is not automatically a keloid: an inflamed piercing, cyst, hypertrophic scar, or other skin lump can look similar. Examination helps distinguish these possibilities and checks for infection.

Do not pick, pierce, cut, or repeatedly rub the area. A dermatologist may discuss steroid injection into the skin, silicone-based scar care, cryotherapy, laser treatment, or surgery depending on the scar’s size, symptoms, colour, and previous behaviour. Surgery alone can be followed by renewed scar growth, so a plan may combine removal with treatment afterwards. Protect the area from friction while it is being assessed.

Book an assessment if the lump is enlarging, painful, persistently itchy, bleeding, or catching on clothing. Seek prompt care for warmth, pus, spreading redness, fever, or sudden swelling, which can signal infection or another problem. A rapidly changing or ulcerated lesion should be examined rather than treated at home.

Ask whether the lesion is a keloid or another skin lump, what treatment fits its location, how recurrence will be reduced, and how wound care will work after any procedure.
