Nausea, shortness of breath and lightheadedness

The combination may occur with an asthma flare, a chest or airway illness, anaemia, an abnormal heart rhythm, or reduced blood flow to the heart. An allergic reaction can also cause breathing trouble, nausea, swelling or wheezing. Shortness of breath is a common presentation of asthma, while lightheadedness can accompany atrial fibrillation; neither symptom identifies its cause by itself.

Notice when the symptoms began, whether they followed exertion, heat, a new food or medicine, and whether chest pressure, palpitations, fever, cough or wheezing is present.

Stop driving or exertion and sit upright somewhere safe. Loosen tight clothing, breathe slowly, and ask someone to stay with you. Use a prescribed reliever inhaler only according to your action plan. Do not take someone else’s medicine, and avoid alcohol while lightheaded. Arrange same-day medical advice even if the episode settles, particularly if it is new or recurring.

Call emergency services now for severe or worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, chest pain or pressure, a very fast or irregular heartbeat, or swelling of the face, tongue or throat. Anaphylaxis requires emergency treatment. Do not drive yourself. Sudden symptoms after a new food, medicine or sting are especially concerning.

Ask whether your symptoms need heart, lung or blood tests; whether any medicine could be contributing; and what warning signs should trigger emergency help. Mention pregnancy possibility, allergies, existing asthma, anaemia or heart conditions, and bring a list of medicines and supplements.
