Nausea and pre-eclampsia: what to know

Pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy condition involving high blood pressure and possible effects on organs. Nausea alone is common in pregnancy and does not diagnose pre-eclampsia. Concern is greater when it is new or severe, particularly alongside headache that does not settle, blurred vision or flashing lights, pain beneath the ribs, sudden swelling of the face or hands, or feeling very unwell. Blood pressure checks, urine testing, and blood tests help clinicians assess the condition and its effect on you and the baby.

Tell your maternity team about new nausea, vomiting, or a change in your usual symptoms. Attend scheduled antenatal checks so blood pressure and urine can be reviewed. Keep a note of when symptoms began, whether you can drink, and any headache, visual, or abdominal symptoms. Treatment and monitoring depend on pregnancy stage and findings; your team may recommend observation, medicines, or planning birth. Do not take someone else’s blood-pressure or anti-sickness medicine.

Seek urgent maternity assessment for severe headache, vision changes, severe pain under the ribs, repeated vomiting with inability to drink, sudden swelling, shortness of breath, confusion, fainting, or reduced fetal movement. These warning symptoms need prompt checks even if nausea seems mild. Call emergency services if you collapse, have difficulty breathing, or develop severe chest or abdominal pain.

Ask what your blood pressure and urine results show, whether blood tests are needed, how often you should be monitored, and which symptoms require immediate return. If birth may be advised, ask why, what timing means for you and the baby, and whether induction or caesarean birth is being considered.
