Short answer
Careful handwashing, short nails, daily underwear changes, and hot washing of bedding can reduce threadworm spread, but medicine may still be needed.

Understanding threadworms
Threadworms, also called pinworms, are small intestinal worms spread when microscopic eggs reach the mouth from hands, clothing, bedding, or shared surfaces. Night-time itching around the anus is typical, and disturbed sleep can affect a child’s behaviour. Some people have no clear symptoms, so household spread can continue unnoticed.
Hygiene measures
Wash hands with soap after using the toilet and before eating, and help children do the same. Keep fingernails short and discourage nail biting or scratching. Shower or wash the anal area in the morning, change underwear daily, and wash sleepwear, towels, and bedding regularly on a hot cycle when the fabric allows. Do not shake bedding, share towels, or rely on food, drinks, or herbs as a substitute for recommended treatment. Ask a pharmacist or GP Consultation how to manage everyone who may need treatment and how to repeat it safely.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice if itching continues after treatment and hygiene measures, worms are seen repeatedly, or the child is very young, pregnant, or has another health condition. Seek assessment for persistent abdominal pain, vomiting, marked tiredness, or irritation around the vagina or penis. Bedwetting can have many causes and should be discussed if it starts or worsens.
Questions for your doctor
Ask how the infection can be confirmed, who in the household needs treatment, and when treatment should be repeated. Mention pregnancy, breastfeeding, age, other medicines, continuing itch, abdominal pain, or sleep disruption.

Questions people ask
Can hygiene alone remove threadworms?
Hygiene reduces reinfection and spread, but many households also need treatment advised by a pharmacist or clinician.
Why do threadworms keep coming back?
Eggs can remain on hands, clothing, bedding, and surfaces, allowing reinfection when hygiene and household treatment are incomplete.
