What should you know about natural treatment for cellulitis in horses?

Cellulitis is an infection and inflammation of deeper skin and soft tissue. In a horse, it may cause sudden limb swelling, heat, redness, pain, stiffness, or reluctance to move. A wound, insect bite, mud fever, or another skin problem can provide an entry point; Athlete's Foot is not a usual explanation for a horse's swollen limb. The pattern can resemble other injuries, so a veterinarian needs to examine the horse and the likely source.

Call a veterinarian promptly and describe when the swelling began, whether it is spreading, and whether the horse is eating, drinking, and bearing weight. Keep the horse in a safe area with clean, dry bedding. Do not apply harsh chemicals, lance the swelling, give human medicines, or force exercise. A veterinarian may recommend wound care, medication, controlled movement, and monitoring.

Seek emergency veterinary help for marked or rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, inability to bear weight, breathing changes, collapse, confusion, or a horse that is very dull. Fever can accompany infection. Worsening skin redness, skin swelling, or painful skin warrants reassessment. A serious spreading infection can lead to sepsis.

Ask what may have started the infection, which movement level is appropriate, how to measure changes in swelling, how to protect any wound, and which signs mean the horse needs immediate review.
