Short answer

Rest, small frequent fluids, avoiding smoke, and calm air may support recovery from whooping cough, but medical advice is needed because coughing fits can affect breathing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main support
Rest, frequent small fluids or feeds, and clean air can reduce strain during recovery.
Infection control
Ask promptly about treatment and protecting vulnerable contacts.

How whooping cough behaves

Whooping cough, also called pertussis, is a contagious infection that can cause repeated coughing fits, vomiting after coughing, exhaustion, and sometimes a high-pitched intake of breath. Babies may have pauses in breathing rather than a clear whoop. The cough can continue after the initial illness feels better. Home measures ease strain and support hydration; they do not remove the infection or reliably prevent complications.

Support during recovery

Follow the clinician's plan and offer small, frequent sips or feeds to reduce the effort of drinking after coughing. Keep the air free from cigarette smoke, incense, strong fragrances, and dust. Let the person rest upright if that feels easier, stay calm during a coughing fit, and avoid forcing food or drink while they are struggling to breathe. Do not give cough medicines, honey, or other remedies to a young child without checking age safety first. Antibiotic Treatment may be prescribed to reduce spread or treat the infection, especially when started early. Keep vulnerable household members away and ask about Childhood Immunisation.

Emergency warning signs

Call emergency services for blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, severe breathing difficulty, collapse, or inability to wake. Seek urgent medical assessment when a child cannot feed, has repeated vomiting with poor fluid intake, becomes unusually sleepy, or has fewer wet nappies. Prompt advice is also needed for worsening Fever, chest pain, dehydration, or a cough that is making normal breathing difficult. Suspected whooping cough should be discussed with a clinician even when breathing seems stable.

Questions for your doctor

Could this be whooping cough, and should testing be arranged? Is antibiotic treatment indicated? How can I protect babies or pregnant household members? Which breathing, feeding, or fever changes require immediate help?

Questions people ask

Can natural remedies stop whooping cough?

They may soothe symptoms, but they do not replace medical assessment or prescribed treatment for this contagious infection.

Why are babies at particular risk?

Babies may develop breathing pauses or feeding difficulty without the classic whoop, so changes in breathing, colour, alertness, or wet nappies need urgent attention.
