Short answer
Warm fluids, rest, soft foods, and salt-water gargles may soothe tonsillitis, but breathing difficulty, dehydration, or severe worsening needs urgent medical care.

Understanding tonsillitis
Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils at the back of the throat. It can cause a sore throat, painful swallowing, swollen glands, fever, muffled speech, or earache. Viruses are a common cause, while some cases are caused by bacteria such as the infection behind Strep Throat. Symptoms alone cannot reliably show which cause is present, so a clinician may need to examine your throat and consider testing.
Supportive care at home
Rest and take frequent sips of water or warm drinks. Choose cool or soft foods if swallowing hurts, and avoid smoke and other throat irritants. Gargling warm salt water may help adults and older children who can gargle safely; do not make children swallow it. Use only age-appropriate pain or fever relief according to the label or a clinician's advice. Do not share utensils or drinks while unwell, and wash hands regularly. A GP Consultation can clarify whether testing or Antibiotic Treatment is appropriate.
Warning signs
Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a rapidly enlarging throat or neck, severe one-sided throat pain, inability to drink, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine and marked drowsiness. Arrange medical advice for persistent Fever, repeated episodes, a rash, or symptoms that are worsening rather than easing. Children who are unusually sleepy or struggling to swallow need prompt assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be viral or bacterial? Do I need a throat test? What fluids, foods, and pain relief are safe for my age or other conditions? When should I return if swallowing remains difficult?

Questions people ask
Do natural remedies cure tonsillitis?
They can ease discomfort and support hydration, but they do not replace assessment when bacterial infection or a complication is possible.
Are antibiotics always needed?
No. The cause matters; antibiotics help selected bacterial infections and should be used only when prescribed.
