Short answer

Natural measures can ease some premenstrual syndrome symptoms, while severe, persistent or disruptive symptoms deserve medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How PMS can show up

Premenstrual syndrome refers to a repeating group of physical and emotional symptoms before a period, followed by improvement after bleeding begins. Breast pain, bloating, headache, tiredness, appetite changes, irritability, low mood and difficulty concentrating may occur. Tracking symptoms against the menstrual cycle helps show whether this pattern is present.

PMS can overlap with anxiety, depression, thyroid problems or other conditions. A symptom diary is more useful than judging one difficult day in isolation. Supplements marketed for PMS can interact with medicines or be unsuitable in pregnancy, kidney disease or other circumstances.

Self-care that may help

Record symptoms, bleeding and their effect on work, relationships and sleep. Aim for regular meals with protein and fibre, consistent sleep, moderate physical activity and time to decompress. Some people find it helpful to reduce alcohol, avoid smoking and moderate caffeine if these worsen anxiety, breast discomfort or sleep.

Use heat for cramps or breast discomfort, and choose a supportive bra if breast pain is troublesome. Ask a pharmacist before using pain medicines, magnesium, vitamin products or herbal preparations, especially if you take other medicines or could be pregnant. If symptoms remain disruptive, a clinician can discuss options such as hormonal treatment or psychological support.

When to seek care

Make an appointment when symptoms regularly disrupt work, relationships, sleep or daily activities, or when they do not follow a clear cycle. Seek urgent help for thoughts of self-harm, severe emotional distress, sudden confusion, or physical symptoms that feel dangerous. A clinician can also assess new breast pain, a new lump or symptoms that continue after the period.

Questions for your doctor

Could my symptoms be PMS, premenstrual dysphoric disorder or another condition? What should I record in a symptom diary? Are supplements or hormonal treatment appropriate with my medical history? Which breast or mood changes should prompt an earlier review?

Questions people ask

Can diet alone cure PMS?

Regular nourishing meals may reduce or prevent some symptoms, but diet alone is not a reliable answer for severe or persistent PMS.

When should breast pain before a period be checked?

Arrange an assessment for a new lump, one-sided or persistent pain, skin or nipple changes, discharge, or discomfort that does not settle with the cycle.
