Natural remedies for perioral dermatitis

Perioral dermatitis is an inflammatory rash that can appear as small red bumps, dryness, scaling, or burning around the mouth. It may also affect skin around the nose or eyes. The rash can resemble acne, so squeezing bumps or applying acne products may increase irritation rather than settle it. A period of simple care can help reveal whether products are aggravating the skin, but home measures do not confirm the diagnosis or treat every cause.

Avoid putting essential oils, lemon juice, vinegar, toothpaste, baking soda, or abrasive scrubs on the rash. These substances can damage the skin barrier and make stinging or redness worse. Do not start or stop a prescribed medicine without discussing the change with a clinician, particularly if a steroid cream has been used on the face.

Wash with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, using clean fingertips instead of a cloth or brush. Pat dry and use a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser if the skin feels tight. Pause exfoliants, retinoids, fragranced products, heavy cosmetics, and other recently introduced products while the rash is active. Keep a note of products that touch the area, including skin care, makeup, sunscreen, and toothpaste, so you can discuss possible triggers at an appointment.

If symptoms continue despite simpler care, a dermatologist can check whether this is perioral dermatitis or another facial rash and select an appropriate treatment. Depending on the assessment, care may include topical antibiotic therapy or oral antibiotics; these should be used only as directed.

Arrange a medical review if the rash is spreading, painful, intensely itchy, crusted, affecting the eyes, or not settling after you remove likely irritants. Seek prompt care for eye pain, vision changes, marked facial swelling, fever, or rapidly worsening redness. Bring a list or photographs of products used on the face and mention any steroid cream, inhaler, or nasal spray exposure.
