Natural remedies for otitis externa

Short answer
Natural measures may ease irritation from otitis externa, but they do not reliably clear infection or replace an ear examination when pain, discharge, or hearing changes occur.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What otitis externa means
Otitis externa, also called swimmer's ear, affects the skin lining the outer ear canal. Water, scratching, earbuds, or skin conditions can disturb this protective lining, allowing inflammation or infection to develop. Tenderness when the outer ear is touched, itching, a blocked feeling, and fluid are typical clues. Earache can be especially uncomfortable; see the related guide to [Earache](/symptoms/earache/).
Keep objects, oils, and homemade mixtures out of the canal. A damaged eardrum, a narrow canal, or an unrecognised middle-ear problem can make drops unsafe or ineffective.
Practical steps at home
Keep the ear dry while washing, and avoid swimming until symptoms settle. Let water drain naturally rather than inserting cotton buds. A warm cloth held against the outside of the ear may provide comfort. Use ordinary pain relief only if it is suitable for you and follow the package directions.
Do not pour vinegar, alcohol, essential oils, garlic oil, or other home preparations into the ear unless a clinician has specifically advised it. A clinician can clean the canal when needed and choose drops that match the cause. A [GP Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/gp-consultation/) is useful if symptoms persist or recur. New muffled hearing should be assessed; see [Hearing Loss](/symptoms/hearing-loss/).
When to seek care
Arrange prompt medical advice for severe or worsening pain, pus or blood, fever, spreading redness, dizziness, or a marked change in hearing. Seek urgent care if swelling closes the canal, pain is intense despite suitable pain relief, or you have diabetes or a weakened immune system. These features can require prescription treatment and closer follow-up.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the eardrum is visible and intact, whether the problem is irritation or infection, which drops are appropriate, and how long to keep the ear dry. Ask what warning signs mean you should return and whether repeated episodes suggest eczema, allergies, or ear-canal trauma.
