Natural remedies for foot cracks

Short answer
Moisturising, gentle filing, and reducing friction can support cracked feet, but deep, painful, or infected cracks need medical care.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Protect
- Keep feet dry and reduce rubbing
- Do not do
- Cut thick skin or apply harsh acids to fissures
Why cracks develop
Cracks form when thick or dry skin loses flexibility, often around the heel. Open fissures can sting and provide an entry point for infection. Itchy peeling between the toes or on the sole may occur with Athlete's Foot, while pressure, prolonged dampness, and irritating footwear can worsen the barrier.
A kitchen ingredient is not a substitute for diagnosis. Lemon, strong antiseptics, and undiluted vinegar may burn fissured skin. Do not cut hard skin with a blade.
Foot care at home
Wash with warm water and a mild cleanser, then dry carefully between the toes. Apply a thick, fragrance-free moisturiser to the heels and other dry areas while skin is slightly damp; keep cream out of toe webs if they are moist or peeling. A pumice stone used gently on intact thick skin can reduce roughness, but never file an open, bleeding, or inflamed crack.
Wear breathable, well-fitting footwear and change damp socks. If a fungal pattern is present, a clinician or pharmacist can advise on [Topical Antifungal Treatment](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-antifungal-therapy/); extensive or persistent infection may need [Oral Antifungal Treatment](/treatments/medical-dermatology/oral-antifungal-therapy/).
When to seek care
Seek medical advice for increasing warmth, swelling, redness, pus, spreading pain, fever, or a crack that will not close. Arrange an assessment sooner if you have diabetes, reduced foot sensation, poor circulation, or repeated wounds. A red, hot, tender area can indicate [Cellulitis](/conditions/cellulitis/), which requires prompt attention.
Itching and peeling may accompany [Athlete's Foot](/conditions/athletes-foot/) or [Nail Fungus](/conditions/nail-fungus/), so mention changes in the nails as well as the skin.
Questions for your doctor
Is this mainly dryness, eczema, pressure, or a fungal infection? Which moisturiser is suitable? Should I use an antifungal? How should I protect an open fissure, and what signs mean I need urgent review?

Questions people ask
Can petroleum jelly help heel cracks?
A plain occlusive moisturiser can reduce water loss and soften dry skin when applied to intact surrounding skin. Protect open cracks and seek advice if they are painful or worsening.
Should I moisturise between my toes?
Avoid leaving heavy moisturiser between toes when the area is damp or peeling, because trapped moisture can worsen some fungal problems.
