Natural remedies for cough

Short answer
Fluids, warm drinks, honey for suitable adults and children, and avoiding smoke may soothe a cough, but the cause still matters.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Soothe
- Fluids, warm drinks, and suitable honey may ease irritation
- Avoid
- Smoke, unsafe steam, and unverified remedies for children
Why a cough happens
Coughing clears mucus, irritants, or inflammation from the airways. A recent cold may leave a cough after other symptoms improve. Nasal drainage, allergic rhinitis, acid reflux, asthma, and acute bronchitis can also cause coughing. A cough with a longer-lasting pattern may need a different assessment.
Honey must not be given to babies under twelve months. Herbal syrups and supplements can interact with medicines, contain ingredients that irritate the airways, or be unsuitable during pregnancy or for children.
Home measures that may help
Drink fluids regularly, try a warm drink, and use honey if it is appropriate for the person's age. Rest, avoid tobacco smoke and strong fragrances, and keep the room comfortably humid without using hot steam near children. Saline nasal rinsing may help when mucus is running from the nose, provided the water and equipment are safe and clean.
Do not start antibiotics for an ordinary cough without medical advice. If you have asthma or another lung condition, follow your prescribed action plan rather than replacing it with a home remedy.
When to seek medical care
Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, chest pain, confusion, coughing blood, or sudden worsening. Arrange a review for a cough that keeps returning, disrupts sleep, comes with unexplained weight loss or fever, or affects a child who is struggling to drink or breathe.
Questions for your doctor
What is the most likely cause of my cough? Do my medicines, reflux, allergies, or asthma play a part? Which home measures are safe for my age and health? How long should I monitor this before review?

Questions people ask
Can honey stop a cough?
Honey may soothe throat irritation for suitable people, but it does not treat every cause and must not be given to babies under twelve months.
Is a cough always a chest infection?
No. Coughing can also result from a cold, nasal drainage, reflux, allergy, asthma, or airway irritation.
