Natural pregnancy after hydrosalpinx removal

A hydrosalpinx is a fallopian tube stretched by trapped fluid. Removing the affected tube, known as a salpingectomy, can leave the other tube available to collect an egg. Pregnancy still depends on ovulation, sperm health, the condition of the remaining tube, and the uterus. If both tubes were removed or blocked, an egg cannot normally meet sperm through the tubes, so assisted reproduction may be discussed.

The cause of the tubal damage matters. Previous pelvic infection, including pelvic inflammatory disease, can affect the remaining tube even when the removed tube was the main problem. Your clinician may review the operation report and consider a test of tubal openness.

Attend the postoperative review and ask when it is appropriate to try for pregnancy. Begin a prenatal vitamin containing folic acid if pregnancy is planned, avoid smoking, and review regular medicines before trying. Track cycles if that helps identify ovulation, but do not let tracking delay care when conception is taking longer than expected.

Contact your surgical team urgently for worsening abdominal pain, fever, heavy bleeding, wound redness, or repeated vomiting after surgery. Once pregnant, seek urgent assessment for one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, fainting, or vaginal bleeding because a pregnancy outside the uterus needs prompt evaluation, especially after tubal disease.

Ask whether the remaining tube appears healthy, whether a tubal assessment is needed, when intercourse and pregnancy attempts are safe, and when a fertility referral would be useful. Ask what symptoms should prompt an early pregnancy scan.
