Natural birth for twins: what to know

Your maternity team will check the babies' growth, placentas, fluid, presentations and wellbeing. The position of the first twin is especially relevant, while the second baby's position can change after the first birth. Labour usually involves close assessment of both heart rates and a plan for help if either baby becomes distressed or birth does not progress. A vaginal plan can include the possibility of caesarean birth for one or both babies, depending on what happens.

Attend recommended appointments and ask where twin labour is supported. Discuss monitoring, movement, pain relief, the staff present, and how the team would manage the interval between births. Call your maternity unit urgently for bleeding, fluid loss, regular painful contractions, severe abdominal pain, faintness or reduced movement from either baby. Follow the unit's instructions about attending hospital, including before labour if symptoms are concerning. During labour, tell staff promptly about sudden pain, dizziness, breathlessness or a change in either baby's movements.
