Nasal drip cough treatment: what helps

Mucus from the nose or sinuses can run down the back of the throat. This may cause throat clearing, a tickling cough, hoarseness, or a cough that is worse when lying down. Allergic rhinitis and a common cold are frequent triggers; acid reflux, asthma, or another airway problem can also contribute. A cough itself does not identify one cause, so the pattern and associated symptoms matter.

Drink fluids regularly, use a saline nasal spray or rinse as directed, and avoid smoke, strong fragrances, and dusty air. Elevating your head during sleep may reduce drainage into the throat. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether an antihistamine or nasal treatment is suitable, particularly if allergy symptoms are present. Antibiotics do not treat a viral cold or allergy-related drainage unless a clinician identifies a bacterial infection. Do not combine cold medicines without checking their ingredients.

Arrange medical assessment if the cough is persistent, repeatedly returns, disrupts sleep, or comes with wheezing, breathlessness, chest pain, fever, or coughing blood. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, or sudden chest pain. A clinician may examine your nose, throat, and chest and review medicines, reflux symptoms, allergies, and asthma.
