What should you know about nasal drip and cough?

You may feel mucus at the back of the throat, frequent throat-clearing, a tickle, hoarseness or a cough that is worse when lying down. Allergic Rhinitis and a Common Cold can increase nasal secretions. Acid Reflux may also irritate the throat and mimic post-nasal drainage. A cough may instead come from Acute Bronchitis, Asthma or another airway condition, so the pattern and examination matter.

Drink fluids regularly, use a saline nasal spray or rinse as directed, and avoid smoke, dust and known allergy triggers. Wash hands and rest if a cold is present. Do not use decongestant sprays for longer than the product instructions, because overuse can worsen blockage. A pharmacist or clinician can help choose treatment for allergies or reflux and check medicines for interactions.

Arrange an assessment if the cough persists, keeps returning, disrupts sleep, or comes with wheezing, fever, breathlessness, chest discomfort or unexplained weight loss. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, coughing blood, blue lips, confusion or sudden chest pain. Children with noisy breathing, poor feeding or unusual sleepiness need prompt review.
