Nasal congestion and high blood pressure: what to know

High blood pressure often causes no noticeable symptoms, while a blocked nose more commonly reflects a cold, allergy, nasal inflammation, or another local problem. Some cold and decongestant products can raise blood pressure or interact with treatment, especially stimulant-containing products. Obstructive sleep apnoea, obesity, chronic kidney disease, and heart failure can also affect blood pressure and sleep or breathing, but nasal blockage alone does not identify any of them.

Measure blood pressure using a validated device and follow the technique given by your clinician; one reading does not establish a diagnosis. Read labels before using cold remedies, and ask a pharmacist about saline care or a suitable alternative. Do not stop prescribed blood-pressure medicine because your nose is blocked. Record the timing of congestion, products used, readings, headaches, chest symptoms, and breathlessness for review.

Seek emergency care for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, confusion, or sudden vision change. These can signal a serious heart or brain problem and should not be attributed to nasal congestion. Arrange a routine review for repeatedly raised readings, troublesome congestion, or medication side effects.
