What should you know about antihistamine medicines?

Histamine contributes to swelling, itching, watery eyes, and increased nasal secretions after an allergic trigger. Antihistamines block histamine receptors, so symptoms may settle without removing the trigger itself. Some are more sedating and can impair driving or concentration; newer options are often less sedating, though individual responses differ.

They may be used for allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, pet allergy, or house dust mite allergy. A blocked nose may need a different treatment, such as a nasal spray, because an antihistamine alone may not open it fully.

Ask a pharmacist which product suits your age, symptoms, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, and other medicines. Follow the label, do not combine products with the same ingredient, and avoid alcohol if the medicine makes you sleepy. Keep the medicine away from children and do not share prescription products.

Reduce exposure where possible: wash bedding regularly for dust-mite allergy, keep pets out of sleeping areas if they trigger symptoms, and limit outdoor allergens when pollen is high. Persistent itchy throat, runny nose, or itchy eyes deserves a review rather than repeated self-treatment without a plan.

Call emergency services for swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, breathing difficulty, wheezing, collapse, or rapidly spreading hives after an exposure. An antihistamine is not a substitute for emergency treatment when breathing or circulation is affected. Arrange medical advice for symptoms that keep returning, disturb sleep, or do not respond as expected.
