What should you know about anti-nausea medicine?

Nausea may arise from stomach irritation, infection, migraine, motion, pregnancy, medication effects, dehydration, or another illness. Some medicines calm signals between the gut and brain; others help the stomach empty or reduce spinning-related sickness. A tablet may be unsuitable when vomiting prevents it staying down, while a dissolving, liquid, or clinician-given option may be considered.

Do not assume that a medicine used by someone else is appropriate for you. Drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, or changes in alertness can occur with some products. Mixing sedating medicines with alcohol can increase impairment.

Read the label and follow the prescribed dose and timing. Sip water or an oral rehydration drink frequently, and choose small, plain meals when tolerated. Tell a pharmacist or doctor if you are pregnant, have glaucoma, heart-rhythm problems, liver or kidney disease, or take medicines that cause sleepiness.

Nausea linked with acid reflux, food poisoning, gallstones, gastritis, gastroenteritis, heat exhaustion, hepatitis A, or hypoglycaemia may need treatment of the underlying problem as well.

Seek urgent care for blood or coffee-ground material in vomit, severe or worsening abdominal pain, confusion, fainting, a stiff neck, chest pain, or signs of serious dehydration such as very little urine. Prompt assessment is also wise when vomiting follows a head injury, continues despite medicine, or affects a young child, older adult, or pregnant person.
