NAFLD and liver enzymes: what do results mean?

Liver function tests usually include enzymes released when liver cells or bile channels are irritated, along with markers that reflect other liver tasks. NAFLD is one possible reason for an abnormal result, but alcohol, medicines, viral infections, muscle injury, and other liver conditions can also contribute. The height of an enzyme result does not directly measure the amount of fat or scarring. A clinician compares the pattern over time with your symptoms, examination, glucose and cholesterol results, and sometimes an abdominal ultrasound or another fibrosis assessment.

Take the report to the clinician who ordered it and provide a complete list of medicines, supplements, and alcohol use. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own. Repeat testing may be recommended after an interval, or your clinician may investigate another cause. Improving meals, activity, sleep, and metabolic health can support the liver; nutrition counselling or a weight management programme may help you build a safe plan. Keep diabetes care on track if it applies to you.

Seek urgent care for yellow eyes or skin with severe illness, confusion, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, or rapidly increasing abdominal swelling. Contact your clinician soon if abnormal results persist, urine becomes unusually dark, stools become pale, itching is intense, or you develop unexplained nausea and marked tiredness. A laboratory result alone cannot predict urgency, so symptoms and trend both matter.
