N2 disease in lung cancer: what it means

N2 is a lymph-node category used in lung cancer staging. It generally refers to cancer in mediastinal or subcarinal lymph nodes on the same side as the primary lung tumour, though the exact classification depends on the tumour type and staging system. Imaging can suggest node involvement, while tissue sampling may be needed to confirm it.

The team also checks the primary tumour, nearby structures and possible spread beyond the chest. The stage helps specialists compare treatment approaches; it does not describe one fixed plan for every person.

Ask how N2 was established, which scans or biopsy confirmed it, and whether the cancer has been tested for features that may guide systemic treatment. A multidisciplinary team may discuss chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery or combinations, depending on fitness, tumour anatomy and the full stage.
