What should you know about myopathy and rhabdomyolysis symptoms?

Short answer
Myopathy can cause muscle weakness or aching, while rhabdomyolysis presents with more severe muscle injury and needs urgent assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Myopathy
- A broad disorder of muscle that may cause weakness or aching
- Rhabdomyolysis
- Acute muscle breakdown that can affect the kidneys
- Urgent clue
- Dark urine with severe pain or weakness
How the symptoms differ
Myopathy is a broad term for a disorder affecting muscle. Symptoms can include weakness, aching, cramps, fatigue with activity, or difficulty climbing stairs, rising from a chair, lifting objects, or raising the arms. The pattern may develop gradually or appear after a medicine, infection, inherited condition, hormone problem, or immune-related illness.
Rhabdomyolysis is a form of acute muscle breakdown. Affected people may have intense muscle pain, tenderness, swelling, unusual weakness, and dark urine. The combination of symptoms is more concerning after heavy exertion, heat exposure, a crush injury, prolonged immobility, or a seizure.
Practical next steps
Stop strenuous exercise and arrange medical advice when weakness is new, progressive, or interfering with ordinary tasks. Keep a note of when symptoms began, which muscles are affected, recent activity, illnesses, and every medicine or supplement you use. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice, but report any symptoms that began after a treatment change.
A clinician may examine strength and reflexes and request blood tests, urine testing, or other investigations. Treatment depends on the cause rather than on symptoms alone.
Warning signs
Seek urgent care for dark or reduced urine, rapidly worsening weakness, severe muscle swelling or pain, trouble breathing or swallowing, confusion, fainting, or weakness that prevents walking. These signs can reflect significant muscle injury or another emergency.
Questions to ask
Ask whether your pattern suggests muscle disease, nerve disease, or another cause; which tests are appropriate; whether activity should be limited; and how to recognise worsening muscle breakdown. Ask when it is safe to resume exercise.

Questions people ask
Is muscle soreness after exercise always rhabdomyolysis?
No. Ordinary post-exercise soreness is common, but severe weakness, swelling, or dark urine needs prompt assessment.
Can myopathy develop gradually?
Yes. Some muscle disorders cause slowly increasing weakness, while others begin suddenly.
