Mycosis fungoides on dark skin: what to know

Mycosis fungoides is a cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. On richly pigmented skin, redness may be subtle or absent. Affected areas can show persistent colour change, fine scale, dryness, itch, or a change from a flat patch to a thicker plaque. Post-inflammatory lightening or darkening can remain after active inflammation settles, making photographs and serial examinations useful.

Record when each area appeared, whether it itches, and how its colour or texture changes. A dermatologist may examine the whole skin surface and take a biopsy from a representative area; one sample may not answer every question, so further assessment can be needed. Treatment can include Topical Corticosteroids, Narrowband UVB Phototherapy, or PUVA Therapy, with attention to pigment changes and individual skin response.

Seek a prompt dermatology review for a patch that keeps enlarging, becomes raised, painful, crusted, or ulcerated. Seek earlier medical advice for widespread itch, new swelling, fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or enlarged lumps.

Ask what colour and texture changes suggest activity, where a biopsy should be taken, and how pigment changes will be separated from active disease. Ask how light-based treatment will be adjusted for your skin and how follow-up photographs can be compared.
