Mycology culture test

A clinician collects scale, nail clippings, or affected hairs and sends the sample for culture. The laboratory watches for fungal growth and may identify the organism. Growth can take time, and a negative result does not always settle the question if the sample was small or treatment affected it. The result is interpreted alongside the appearance, symptoms, and other tests rather than in isolation.

Follow the clinic's instructions about creams, nail products, and antifungal medicines before sampling; do not stop a prescribed medicine without checking first. Tell the clinician about recent treatment and exactly where the problem began. Keep the area clean, but avoid vigorous scrubbing before the appointment. After collection, care is usually simple, although a nail or skin site may feel briefly tender.

Contact the clinic if the sampled area becomes increasingly painful, red, swollen, or produces pus. Seek review if the problem spreads, returns after treatment, or affects several nails or body sites. Do not wait for a culture result if you develop a rapidly worsening rash, fever, or signs of a serious infection.
